On October 5, 1968, Tom married the one and only love of his life, Melva Wuestner at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Baltimore. After their extensive travels throughout Europe in the first 8 years of their marriage, they went on to have the other love of their life, their only daughter. Gretchen Whitehill Northern.

The avid fisherman and casual watercolor painter is predeceased by his parents, Elbert and Mary Jean Northern (née Whitehill), his brother Martin Northern and his beloved mother-in-law Eve Wuestner (née Carter).
