Carolyn Vogel Smith

On September 6, 2023, Carolyn Vogel Smith passed away at 93 years old at the Charlestown Senior Living Community in Catonsville, Maryland.  She was a loving wife to the late Charles William Smith, and the mother of four children: Eric (Linda), Mark (Lisa), Brian (Holly), and Carla Gregory (Howard). Grandmother of seven children: Evan, Kenneth, Erica,  Rebecca, Carolanne, Andrea, and Bryton. Great grandmother of two children: Riley, and Ethan.

Carolyn was one of six children. Her parents Bernard and Regina Vogel raised five girls: Mary, Carolyn, Marlene, Anne, and Jean and one boy Bernard (Dex). She is survived by her three sisters Mary, Anne, and Jean, and all her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  

Carolyn was born at home on the multi-acre grounds of Notch Cliff Convent where her parents resided in a small farm house on the property. Her father Bernard Vogel was an administrator for the School Sisters of Notre Dame and managed the grounds for the convent. In 1931, the family moved to Highlandtown, Baltimore in the neighborhood where many of the relatives resided. In 1935, they purchased their own farm in Rosedale, MD which at the time was rural land. 

Carolyn graduated from Institute of Notre Dame high school in 1948. After high school she worked a few years as a secretary for a small business. In 1955 she married Charles Smith.

Carolyn’s dream was to go to college and in 1979 after her children were older she earned a 2-year Associate's Degree from Howard Community College. 

Anyone who knew Carolyn knew she was always working on a project.  Whether it be house painting or artistic painting, gardening or major overhaul landscape projects, refinishing furniture or interior decorating, cooking or looking for new recipes, Carolyn had no limits to her creative talents. Her admirable qualities also included a boundless capacity for loving kindness, compassion, and gentleness. 

Services for Carolyn Vogel Smith will take place Tuesday, September 19 at Our Lady of Angels Chapel At Charlestown Community at 711 Maiden Choice Lane Catonsville, MD 21228. 

The viewing at the Chapel will start at 10am. The Mass will start at 10:30am. Following the mass there will be a procession to Sacred Heart of Jesus Cemetery at 7401 German Hill road Dundalk, MD 21222. The Celebration of life luncheon will follow at Charlestown Senior Living Community.
